Contest Rules for Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award

The Amazon Breakthrough Novel award began six years ago in 2007. The contest opens in  January, and accepts entries for two weeks. (Check the website for specific dates.).

Once the contest begins, entries are accepted at midnight on the opening day of submissions until midnight on the closing day. In 2013 the contest opened January 14th, at midnight and closed on January Jan 27 – at midnight. ABNA accepts manuscripts in five categories: General Fiction, Mystery/Thriller, Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror, Romance, and Young Adult Fiction.

Prizes

 The Grand Prize winner will receive an Amazon Publishing contract and a $50,000 advance against future royalties, and four First Prize winners will each receive a $15,000 Amazon Publishing contract and a $15,000 advance against future royalties.

How to Enter

To enter, you must have a free CreateSpace account. (You can link to the ABNA through the CreateSpace account dashboard.) Sign up for your free account at www.CreateSapce.com. There’s no cost to enter the contest.

The contest is limited to 10,000 entries. You manuscript must be entered in one of five categories:

a. General Fiction

b. Mystery/Thriller

c. Science Fiction/Fantasy/Horror

d. Romance

e. Young Adult Fiction

Entries may be edited by the entrant until the entry deadline or until a category has reached the maximum number of allowed entries, whichever first occurs. To register, link from your Createspace account Dashboard or go to www.CreateSpace.com/abna. Once you have registered, follow the instructions on the entry form:

(1) The complete version of your manuscript that is between 50,000 and 150,000 words(“Manuscript“)

(2) Up to the first 5,000 words, but not less than 3,000 words, of your manuscript, excluding any table of contents, foreword, and acknowledgments (“Excerpt“)

(3) A pitch of your Manuscript consisting of up to 300 words (“Pitch“); and

(4) The personal information required on the entry form.

(1-4 collectively represent your “Entry“).

Submitting Your Entry

Registrations and submissions must be entered during the open entry period which is generally two weeks in January each year. In 2013, for example, the contest was open from  January 14, 2013 to January 27, 2013.

Up to 10,000 entries are accepted by Amazon. Once they have 10,000 entries submission is closed immediately.

Amazon editors  select up to 2,000 top Entries (by reviewing pitch statements for Valid Entries) which are announced at www.amazon.com/abna in  mid-February. Amazon editors and Amazon Vine Reviewers (preferred reviewers as determined by Amazon), will then read the 3,000 to 5,000 word Excerpts from each of the remaining 2,000 Entries to narrow the field to up to 500 Quarter-Finalists who are announced at www.amazon.com/abna on or about mid-March. Winning authors are then posted on ABNA site and Amazon customers can vote on their favorite book.

Here are the highlights of contest rules. Please read the guidelines carefully before submitting.

How Amazon Chooses the Winners

Round 1 (Pitch) Amazon-selected, editors will read and rate an up to 300-word pitch from each entrant. The top 400 entries in each of the five categories will advance to the second round.

Round 2 (Excerpt) Amazon Expert Reviewers will read and rate the 3,000- to 5,000-word excerpts and provide feedback to the entrants. The top 100 entries in each of the five categories will advance to the Quarterfinals.

Quarterfinals (Full Manuscript) Reviewers from Publishers Weekly will read and rate the full manuscripts and provide feedback to the entrants. The top five entries in each of the five categories will advance to the Semi-Finals.

Semi-Finals Editors with Amazon Publishing will read full manuscripts of the 25 Semi-Finalists and select five Finalists, one in each of the five categories.

Finals Amazon customers will read the Finalists excerpts and vote for their favorite. The novel with the most votes will win the Grand Prize. All remaining Finalists will receive a First Prize in their category.
